Women outlive men and have a more aggressive immune system than males; this is probably the reason for the greater occurrence of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in females. Discuss the following.

A. SLE and its implications for health.

B. Causation of autoimmune type I diabetes mellitus.

What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)?

Chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder.

Causes:

  • SLE is an autoimmune disease.
  • Autoimmune disease happens when there is problem with the normal immune system.
  • When an individual had autoimmune disorder, the immune system cannot differentiate between healthy and harmful substances thus causing an overactive immune response which will attack healthy cells and tissues.

Implications Of SLE To Health

Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect the organs in several ways.

For example:

  • Kidneys: SLE can cause inflammation to the kidneys. Some patients may notice dark urines, and swelling around the legs, fingers, eyes or ankles.








  • Lungs: individual may get pneumonia if affected with lupus or chest pain if lining of chest cavity is infected











  • Central nervous system: SLE can affect a person’s brain or central nervous system causing dizziness, vision problems,seizures, stroke, depression, memory disturbance or changes in behavior.
  • Blood vessels: blood vessels can be inflamed affecting blood circulation thus may increase risk of heart diseases.

Other Complications

  • Destruction of the red blood cells (Hemolytic anemia)
  • Infection
  • Inflammation of the heart (Myocarditis)
  • Seizures
  • Fluid around the lungs or heart (Serositis)
  • Severely low blood platelets (Thrombocytopenia)

- Fatigue



- Fever


- Joint Pain and Swelling


- Muscle Aches


- Nausea & Vomiting


- Pleural Effusions [ sounds chim ehh! o.O]*


- Pleurisy (Causes chest pain!):[ ooh??]*

- Sensitivity to Sunlight

WOOLALA!~ FOR ALLLLL THE huh ooh ahh woww with * , we are going to give you the explainations of those terms!! [yay!]

Arthritis : Consists of more than 100 diseases (ooH!) where the joints, surrounding tissues and other connective tissues are affected. Arthritis can cause mild to severe pain in the joints, as well as joint swelling. Arthritis occurs more in women than men.


Pleural Effusions : It is the accumulation of fluid between the layers of tissue that surround the lungs and chest cavity.

Psychosis : Loss of contact with reality, and usually includes thinking about false ideas about what is taking place or who one is (delusions) and seeing or hearing things that aren't there(hallucinations).

Seizures : Seizures happen because of a sudden and abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Not all seizures cause convulsions!

Skin Rash : A "butterfly" rash over the cheeks & the bridge of the nose. The rash gets worse under sunlight! The rash may also be widespread.

Swollen Glands : Enlargement of one or more lymph nodes! We shall not explain what lymph nodes are cuz it's explained in the lectures/lecture notes!! =DD wahahahahahaaa!

Do all the people have the same symptoms when suffer from SLE?


o NO!!! The symptoms vary from individual and may come and go. The condition may affect the organs or body system at first while others might become involved later.



Why are women more vulnerable to SLE compared to men?


o SLE affects nine times as many women as men as women have aggressive immune system! Patients with an autoimmune disease, the immune system can't tell the difference between harmful substances and healthy ones. Thus, women who have aggressive immune system have overactive immune response that attacks otherwise healthy cells and tissue leading to SLE.


Is there a cure for patients suffering from SLE?


NO ): There is no cure. However, treatments are available to control the symptoms. Severity of treatments depends on individual symptoms.


Treatments for individual depend on their symptoms!
Examples: mild diseases like rash, headache can be treated by little therapy. Severe or life-threatening symptoms (such as hemolytic anemia, extensive heart or lung involvement, kidney disease, or central nervous system involvement) often require treatment by a rheumatologist and other specialists

In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. It usually starts in childhood or adolescents.


Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disorder that involves:



  • Beta cells(produce insulin) in the pancreas are slowly destroyed and causes a deficiancy in insulin
  • Blood glucose in the body become very very high, this is CALLED hyperglycamia!! woohoo

  • The body then cannot use the sugar for further uses.
  • It then spills into the urine and remove from the body
  • Patients with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin everyday to survive!!



Here are some of the symptoms!

- Frequent urination

- Irritability

- Blurred vision

The Risk Factors! Beware!!

Males and females are equally at risk! Most typical in adolescence.

  • Being ill during early infancy

  • Having a parent with type 1 diabetes

  • Having an old mother

  • Having a mother who had peeclampsia!! during pregnancy

  • Having OTHER autoimmune disorders! e.g. graves disease, hashimoto's thyroiditis...etc

Complications....very serious!!! be cautious!

  • It reduces lifespan by about 5-8 years!!! OMG!!

  • Good control of blood glucose!

  • Keep HbA1c levels below 7%! - this can help to prevent complications due to vascular abnormalities and nerve damage that can cause damage to organs

  • Manage risk factors for heart. Blood gucose control helps the heart

  • People with diabets must also control that blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other factors associated with heart disease.
