Autoimmune disease happens when there is problem with the normal immune system.
When an individual had autoimmune disorder, the immune system cannot differentiate between healthy and harmful substances thus causing an overactive immune response which will attack healthy cells and tissues.
Implications Of SLE To Health
Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect the organs in several ways.
For example:
Kidneys: SLE can cause inflammation to the kidneys. Some patients may notice dark urines, and swelling around the legs, fingers, eyes or ankles.
Lungs: individual may get pneumonia if affected with lupus or chest pain if lining of chest cavity is infected
Central nervous system: SLE can affect a person’s brain or central nervous system causing dizziness, vision problems,seizures, stroke,depression, memory disturbance or changes in behavior.
Blood vessels: blood vessels can be inflamed affecting blood circulation thus may increase risk of heart diseases.
Other Complications
Destruction of the red blood cells (Hemolytic anemia)
